Zumbi dos Palmares was a free man born in the Quilombo dos Palmares, who was murdered on November 20, 1695. He died fighting for the freedom of Black people and his head was displayed in a public square in Recife to serve as an example. With the Brazilian law 12.519, 2011, the Dilma Rousseff government made the anniversary of his death a national holiday, 311 years later. The ferry bearing his name carries passengers from Salvador to Itaparica every day.
